How fruity are your Hot Cross Buns? 

Hot-Cross-bunsTry Melbourne's fruitiest hot cross buns (sometimes misspelled as hot crossed buns or hot x buns). Our hot cross buns are loaded with fruit and made with only the very best ingredients to a time-tested Ferguson Plarre recipe.

Our Hot Cross Buns were awarded the runners-up trophy in the 2011 National Hot Cross Bun competition against hundreds of Australia's best bakers. We'll be aiming for the number one spot in 2012 but in the mean time, try one of Australia's best buns this Easter!

Hot Cross Buns with 58% fruitThe fruit test

We're passionate about quality Hot Cross Buns, so we purchased 1/2 dozen buns from three leading Hot Cross Bun suppliers. We weighed them, pulled them apart, separated the fruit, weighed the fruit and rated them. The results were as follows:

  1. Brand # 1 Hot Cross Bun: 23% fruit
  2. Brand # 2 Hot Cross Bun: 15% fruit
  3. Brand # 3 Hot Cross Bun: 2% fruit
  4. Ferguson Plarre Hot Cross Bun: 58% fruit

Now admittedly we didn't pull apart 1000 buns so maybe the other bakers were just having a bad day or they forgot to add some fruit to the recipe. But one thing's for sure....our pastrycooks didn't! Please email us if you have any interesting stories about fruitless buns.

Ice Cream Hot Cross Buns!

Slice & toast your favourite Hot Cross Bun. Put in a scoop of vanilla ice cream, dust with bun with icing sugar and drizzle lightly with maple syrup. Serve warm. Scrumptious!

CINNAMON BUTTER

Combine a little caster sugar, ground cinnamon and unsalted butter. Cut the buns in half and spread with lashings of mouthwatering Cinnamon butter. Then just grill or place buns in the oven until the Cinnamon butter has melted and the buns have warmed through.

 

LEMON BUTTER

Combine unsalted butter with a small amount of castor sugar, lemon rind and lemon juice. Mix the ingredients until the mixture is smooth and creamy and then spread the Lemon butter over warm buns for a taste sensation.

 

VANILLA BUTTER

Place unsalted butter, a little castor sugar and a few drops of vanilla essence in a mixing bowl. Beat until the sugar has dissolved. Cut the buns in half and spread with the creamy Vanilla butter. Grill or place the buns in the oven until the butter has melted.

 

HONEY & ORANGE BUTTER

For a great treat, combine unsalted butter with castor sugar, honey and orange rind. Beat until the sugar has dissolved through the mixture. Spread the Honey and Orange butter over warm buns, take a waft of the aroma and let the family hoe into them!
