Introducing a Brand New Ferguson Plarre Bakehouse
Friday 16th November 2007
Victoria's Premier, John Brumby officially opened Ferguson Plarre’s new environmentally sustainable bakehouse in Keilor Park.
The new bakehouse will supply the 106-year-old family business’ 33 stores across Melbourne.
“It is heartening to see a Victorian business that has been operating for more than 100 years continuing to innovate,” he said.
“This is a great example of how Victorian businesses can be ResourceSmart, demonstrating how even a traditional industry like baking can pioneer a more environmentally sustainable future.”
The Premier said Ferguson Plarre Bakehouses had worked closely with Sustainability Victoria’s ResourceSmart team in planning the new state of the art bakehouse.
“This collaboration helped the company to develop business strategies to address energy, water and materials efficiencies across its operations,” The Premier said.
“The new Keilor Park premises features groundbreaking initiatives including hot water generation using heat reclaimed from refrigeration plants, installation of real-time monitoring of energy and water consumption, and rainwater tanks for toilet flushing, irrigation and truck washing.
“About 60 per cent of the environmental impacts of a facility like this are locked in at design stage.”
Mr Brumby said Ferguson Plarre Bakehouses had also committed to offsetting any remaining greenhouse emissions from their new bakehouse by supporting native tree planting through Greenfleet.
“The company’s purchase of Victoria’s first hybrid-diesel delivery truck in July is another demonstration if its commitment to improving its environmental sustainability,” Mr Brumby said.
“The good news is that Ferguson Plarre will also be enjoying the economic advantage that comes from improving their environmental impact.”
The baking industry forms part of the larger food and beverage sector, Australia’s largest manufacturing sector, and employs around 10,000 Victorians.
